Tasks
- Have someone
older teach you how to do a cryptic crossword.
- Talk to someone
who has been overseas recently. Talk about one of the countries they
visited. Find out the capital city, the type of government, the currency,
the climate, the time difference compared to Australia.
- Discuss your opinion
of an overseas current news issue with an adult. Research your topic
first in the newspapers, on TV or radio. Watch how the issue develops
over time.
- Talk with an adult
to identify a local environmental issue. Think of four key points you
could make in a speech or a letter to the local city council about this
issue.
- Over a week, watch
the news on three different TV channels. Discuss with an adult how their
formats vary. Conduct a quick survey in your house…. Which news
service is preferred and why?
- Listen to ads
on the radio. Identify persuasive words and techniques that you would
think would influence audiences. Listen to a different type of radio
station. Identify the influential language in their ads. Discuss with
an adult your opinion of how and why this differs from the initial radio
station.
- Have a family
game of Scrabble.
Consider three movies you have seen recently. What was the key message
in each? Discuss with an adult the key message in 2 movies they have
seen recently.
