Family Tasks

Years 5/6: Numeracy Tasks

  • Multiply the numbers in your home phone number. Estimate the answer first, then check your answer with a calculator.
  • Estimate how much TV you watch every week. Talk about your estimation with an adult then work it out (round off the times to half hour blocks if you need to.)
  • Estimate how long dinner takes one night, including making it, eating and cleaning up. Time it in hours and minutes.
  • Estimate the height of all the members of your family. Find out their actual heights, check your estimates and order the heights. Write it down somewhere where you can check the heights in six months time!!
  • Find the footy results from the weekend. Which team kicked the:
    -most goals?
    -least goals?
    -most points?
    -least points?
Create five statements about the results and talk to an adult about these statements.
  • Draw a bird’s eye view of your bedroom.
Ask everyone in your family to identify their favorite fruit. Think of two different ways to show your results, but consider the best way. Ask an adult if you can ring some of your extended family to include in this survey – plan out what you will say to them over the phone to clearly explain why you are ringing.
  • Add the numbers on the bar codes of four different items. Use a calculator to check your answer.
