Family Tasks

Year 7: Numeracy Tasks

  • Find someone who can teach you the numbers 1 – 20 in a new language.
  • Find your house in a Melways. Identify five places of interest your family could visit that would be within a 20 kms radius.
  • Find one thing in each room of your house that has an angle of less than 45 degrees, and one thing with an angle of more than 45?. Then go outside and see if you can find two angles of less than 45? and two angles of more than 45?.
  • See if you can find someone in your family who can explain how the percentages are worked out in the Australian Football League.
  • Estimate the perimeter of your family room. Ask some other members of your family to estimate this as well. Now measure it – and decide who was the closest in their estimation. Now do the same for the area of this room, that is have some people estimate first, then measure it. This time use a calculator to ensure accuracy. Figure out who was closest in their estimate.
  • You win a $150 voucher for Werribee Plaza in a competition. How will you spend it? (You cannot be given any change.) Ask two people older than you and two people younger than you how they would spend this amount of money.
  • Use a calculator to determine the average age of people in your house. Now do the same for all your ‘extended’ family, that is, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins…etc
  • Try to figure our how much time is spent each week by people in your family travelling to and from work and school. Talk through the strategies you used to get your answer with an adult.
