Our aim, at Carranballac P-9 College, is to provide every student with access to an IT device in the classroom. To supprt this vision, students in Years 5 - 9 are encouraged to purchase their own personal laptop for school and home use. We also aim to have class-sets of IT devices available to all students across the college.
Our ICT Vision does not stop here. We will keep you informed about other areas my ICT Team is investigating, such as 3-D printing and the introduction of Computer Coding.
We are excited about the vision of our ICT team, and the future of technology at Carranballac P-9 College.
A message from the College Director regarding ICT developments at the College and a list of recommended Computer parents may wish to purchase.
I am very pleased to inform parents that over last two years we have had a number of exciting developments in the area of Information & Communication Technology (ICT), both in terms of provision of new hardware and new software at the College.
In 2016, we upgraded our ICT infrastructure at the Jamieson Way Campus, making our ICT network more stable, reliable and much faster. During the 2016/2017 Christmas break, we will be upgraded the ICT infrastructure at the Boardwalk Campus.
These changes facilitated the smooth introduction of curriculum and administrative software packages which been installed on our College ICT Network. Let me briefly highlight some of these changes:
This now brings me to the most important purpose for this letter. In order to get the most out of the above software, students must have access to One-to-One Computer devices 24/7.
We have investigated a number of IT device options, including their prices. I have attached a list of computers which the school recommends as well as the suppliers with whom we have negotiated these prices. Furthermore, if you already have a laptop at home and you wish to allow your child to bring these devices to school (BYOD – Bring Your Own Device), my technicians will be able to advise you on whether they can be connected to our WIFI network. Students will be required to sign an ICT Acceptable Use Agreement in line with College expectations.
When making the decision to purchase, we strongly recommend the device meets the following specifications:
Processor: Intel i3 minimum
RAM: 4GB RAM minimum
Hard Drive: 128 GB (SSD encouraged)
Display Size: 11” minimum
Operating System: Windows (Windows Pro would be preferable but not necessary)
Battery Life: Minimum 6 hrs (we encourage students to leave chargers at home)
Students are encouraged to bring their laptop devices to school each day to support their learning in the classroom.
Having access to their own computers at all times will enable students to continue to work on learning tasks and complete homework tasks at home.
Monitored ICT devices are valuable tools that provide useful skills to support class work, research curriculum resources and enable teachers to track classroom progress through Compass. This will also prepare our students for the digital world of work.
Our aim for the future is to give every student, in Years 5-9, access to a One-to-One IT device, whether it be an IT device owned by the student or a computer supplied by the College for use in the classroom only. We also continue to work toward class-sets of IT devices available to students in Early Primary.
Our ICT Vision does not stop here. We will keep you informed about other areas my ICT Team is investigating, such as 3-D printing and introduction of Computer Coding.
