School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) and Positive Classroom Management Strategies
At Carranballac College, we use Positive Classroom Management Strategies (PCMS) and School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) to create safe, respectful, inclusive and engaging environments where every student can learn and thrive.
Together, PCMS and SWPBS provide a consistent approach to supporting positive behaviour across our College.
School Wide Positive Behaviour
SWPBS provides our whole-College approach. It establishes clear expectations for how we connect, learn and thrive across classrooms, playgrounds and other College settings. Students are explicitly taught these expectations, and positive behaviours are acknowledged and reinforced.
Our School Values are an integral part of the school community. They provide a foundation for shared understanding and a common language across the school for students, teachers and families.
School Values
Our School Values are fostered by: Encouraging and inspiring a love of learning; Celebration of the achievements of all students and staff; Promoting strong partnerships between school and home. Our students follow our Values Matrix which helps them in all aspects of their social, emotional and academic learning.
Respect
Being honest and valuing ourselves, other people, property and privacy.
Responsibility
Behaving in an appropriate manner and making good decisions.
Resilience
Embrace new opportunities and skills and proactively face challenges.
Integrity
Being honest, reliable, fair.
Inclusiveness
Values differences and welcomes others.
Positive Classroom management Strategies
Supports teachers to put these principles into practice in their classrooms. It focuses on proactive strategies that build positive relationships, support engagement and help students understand and meet expectations.
Our PCMS approach
Our teachers use a range of strategies to support students to be successful:
Build positive relationships
We take the time to know our students, understand their strengths and interests, and build respectful and positive relationships.
Teach clear expectations
Expectations are explicitly taught, modelled and reinforced so students understand what successful behaviour looks like.
Prevent and pre-correct
Teachers anticipate situations where students may need additional support and provide reminders, prompts and guidance before difficulties arise.
Engage students in learning
We create predictable, supportive and engaging learning environments that encourage participation, confidence and a sense of belonging.
Acknowledge positive behaviour
Students are recognised and encouraged when they demonstrate the behaviours and learning dispositions we value.
Respond calmly and consistently
When challenges arise, staff respond in a calm, respectful and consistent way, supporting students to understand what happened, repair relationships where appropriate and develop the skills needed for future success.
A consistent approach across our College
PCMS and SWPBS are part of our broader Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). This means we provide strong universal support for all students while also providing additional support when students need it.
Our approach is proactive rather than simply responding when behaviour becomes challenging. We focus on building relationships, explicitly teaching expectations, preventing difficulties and supporting students to develop the skills they need to be successful.
Through PCMS and SWPBS, we aim to ensure that every student is known, connected and engaged as a person and as a learner.
